How to sharpen your rusted hobby knives

Hello Gunpla fans!!! I was supposed to be back working on a Gunpla project when I noticed that another blade i'm using have gone bad and blunt. I don't intend to make another entry but this problem has to be documented.

I bet this time you have encountered this problem and the only solution you turned to was to buy replacements and throw the old, rusted, and blunted blades.

Well, I thought of it as such a waste just throwing and throwing blades when you can have them sharpen as new. The good news here is that, you don't need to go to a blacksmith or blade shops to have the sharpen. You can do it yourself! Also, you can do this in minutes!! Even greater!!!!

What you need:

Basically, all you need is this wonderful thing..

Electronic Nail Sander

Just to give you a little background, I studied Electric Engineering way back and for me, this battery operated contraption is no good when the battery dies. So, I kinda modified mine to be somehow powered by a power supply that's directly connected to a wall socket. That means, UNLIMITED POWER!!! :D

Here's how mine looks like and with the power supply.

STEP 1: We'll use the "diamond cone" pin from the set of pins.

Using this cone, sweep the blade away from you slowly. Take note of the angle of the blade and follow it as you sweep. Avoid sweeping on another angle, it will ruin the blade itself.

Do this on the other side of the blade as well.

Inspect the blade and make sure you see how the blade should be angled. The more acute the angle, the sharper your blade will be.

Then feel the blade with your thumb. The blade should be smooth. Also take note on the direction of your thumb. It should follow the blade and not against it, or else, you'll be seeing a lot of blood.

Do feel both sides of the blade to ensure the sharpness.

In case you feel somehow rough, Just run the "diamond cone" again until you are satisfied with the smoothness.

STEP 2 : We will further smoothen the blade using the "grinding barrel" pin.

Just the same as earlier, run it down the blade until smooth. Again, do this on both sides.

TEST : Try cutting paper. See how you made progress. Repeat the process if you are not yet satisfied on the sharpness.

Good thing with this, you can sharpen ALL blunted blades. Now you can have new spare blades in stock!!!

and that's it for now!
